What is reflexology? Reflexology is the systematic application of pressure techniques to the feet and hands. The nerve pathways in each foot create an electrochemical flow that communicates with the entire nervous system. Each reflex point connects with a specific organ, gland or body part. Through the application of pressure using specific thumb and finger techniques, reflexology connects with the peripheral nervous system and encourages the body to relax and return to homeostasis or balance. What are the benefits of reflexology? Reduces stress, tension and anxiety Increases blood and lymphatic flow Improves oxygen delivery Normalizes glandular function Cleanses the body of toxins Balances the body systems Improves emotional health Serves as a preventive system Enhances other forms of bodywork Encourages the body to heal faster Reduces pain Improves sleep patterns Sharpens mental alertness Clients Tell Reflexologists “I feel like I’m walking on air.” V.M. “My back doesn’t hurt anymore. When I came in I could hardly move.” J.W. “My headache is gone.” J.S., F.M. “I came in stressed out and left feeling like a new person.” B.P. “My sprained ankle had noticeably improved with one session.” D.C. “The tightness in my neck and shoulder is there no more!” M.M.H. Reflexology and You What can reflexology offer you?? According to client reports, Reflexology relaxes, reduces stress without drugs, helps with sleep, sinus pain, banishes headaches, muscle aches and pains. The Maryland Reflexology Association (MDRA) is an independent, non-profit organization comprised of Members and Associates who are interested in advancing both knowledge and interest in Reflexology. The MDRA is not associated with, nor does it endorse any school, institute, reflexology curriculum, or instructor. Our mission is to provide information, education, and communication for Reflexology professionals as well as the general public. We encourage professional standards and provide a forum for local, regional and national concerns.
